Al-Ghazzali: The Alchemy of Happiness

Yesterday evening, Hana and I were able to catch the IHYA run event, which was entitled: Al-Ghazzali: The Alchemy of Happiness. It was an 80 minute documentary reflecting on the life and times of the great Imam and Sufi. It was a very good film, albeit, a little heavy for a Wednesday night after a long day's work. If you have a chance of somehow watching this film, I'd highly recommend it. Otherwise, simply pick up some of his works, for he is a scholar for the ages.

One telling quote for the times, that Hamza Yusuf made, while commenting on a moment in Ghazzali's earlier life when he was troubled with his own internal conflict was: "His knowledge was a camouflage for his own ignorance." SubhanAllah. How many of us are like this, or simply are overtly ignorant? Watching the turbulence which Ghazzali went through, in order to resolve internal doubts, and to answer his own philosophical questions was intriguing, and quite humbling. How many of us think this way these days? How many of us question our own purpose here on earth? How many of us have a true understanding of what we are? How many of us know what will truly and ultimately make us happy? How many of us are true seekers of Divine Love?

Just a few thoughts...

It was a nice evening. However, IHYA needs to start running on Eastern Standard Time, especially since it was not during a weekend.
